California State University, San Bernardino

June 27, 2003 in Los Angeles
Friday

Liu Jia arrived at 9:30 am. She drove me direct to her university – California State University, San Bernardino. The symbol of the university is coyote, the sculptures are at the entrance of the university. Jia told me that the sculptures were made by a Chinese with the price of $150,000. She also told me that the coyotes are just at the back mountains. We visited Robert V. Fullerton Art Museum there and watched Ancient Egyptian Collection exhibition. Jia is familiar with Egypt philosophy; she did the guide for me. Jia also told me that her school library has the biggest pornographic collection in United States.
Jia brought me to a Korea restaurant; we had Tofu (bean cube) and BBQ rib there. The food was very good. Jia sent me back around 3:30. We sat and chatted until 6:00 pm.
I called Sam at 6:00 pm. Sam and Lara already got up; we did a chat about one hour. After that, mother in law called and also chatted about one hour. I had dumpling as supper.
Helen was back around 8:30 pm. Sam met me online and used video conference function. I can’t set either audio or video on laptop. What I could do was that watch the video from that part. Lara and Sam sat before the computer and typed chat with me. I could watch them and typed also. I called Sam’s mobile phone and made a ridiculous video/audio conference.

Wednesday

We went to The Huntington Library at 1:15 pm. Helen's friend was already waiting for us. She came for me get discount from the bookstore there since she has the membership card. I read the introduction of the library. It was donated by Henry E. Huntington and his wife Arabella D. Huntington in 1913. This library has 4,000,000 collections now and has a very fantastic garden.

We walked around in the garden. The garden is divided into several themes include desert, Japanese, Australian, Zen and palm garden. There are some plants I never saw anywhere else before.

I also visited gallery there, it collects some very good paints. The most famous paintings are Jonathan Buttall: The Blue Boy and Sarah Barrett Moulton: Pinkie.

We went to Fry’s at 5:00 pm, I bought one more 128M Intelligent Stick. Even it doesn’t need card reader, but I still got one inside package.

We had a dinner with Sam’s uncle together at a Chinese restaurant called New Island. We ordered 3 pounds shrimp, 3 pounds crab, 3 pounds lobster, Seafood Tofu, Holothurians Chicken Soup, Peking Rib and Mixed Vegetables.

Hsi Lai Temple

June 25, 2003 in Los Angeles, CA
Wednesday

I got up at 9:00 am. Fang Zhou Zi (ark) sent email to me and said that he will return to San Diego at July 5th delaying by SARS. I also contacted Liu Jia and set the appointment at Saturday. We went to the post office and bought stamps for Jonathan.

Cai recommended that a temple called Hsi Lai, we drove there. It is a real good and clean temple. It is as clean as the temple which I saw in Tokyo. His Lai temple is on the hill, I don’t know the name. The layout of the temple is traditional, but the layout of the Bodhisattvas is not the standard order. It doesn’t have the Kwan-yin’s and Arhats’ halls. Kwan-yin and Arhats are just at the right and left gardens. Bodhisattva Wei Tuo is just at the right of the entrance. The temple also has two sets of Bronze Vehicle and Horses; those were excavated at 1980 from Emperor Qishihuang’s Mausoleum. Helen also told me that her previous boss is the biggest donator of this temple. I also got some free CD, cassette and books there.

After that, we drove back to home and had Shanghai style shrimp noodle.

Private flight

June 22, 2003 in Reno, NV
Sunday

From Reno south over Minden, Nevada and Bridgeport, California to Lee Vining and Mono Lake. This is along the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada range. We had to gain altitude from 4412 feet above sea level at Reno to 14,500 feet above see level at Lee Vining. From Lee Vining we turned west and crossed the Sierras over Tioga Pass, and then went southwest to fly directly over Yosemite Valley.

Yosemite Valley is the heart of the National Park. Then we flew northwest to the Gold Rush country, and followed the Gold Rush towns north, landing at Columbia to refuel. Next time we must allow enough time to walk into town. It is preserved as a historical Gold Rush town of the mid-19th century.

From Columbia we flew north past various Gold Rush towns in the western foothills of the Sierras, and at Placerville, California, we turned northeast and began climbing to cross back over the Sierras.

We flew directly over the Squaw Valley ski area site of the 1960 Winter Olympics. We could also see Lake Tahoe off to our right. We had seen Lake Tahoe to our right going south from Reno several hours earlier. About 10 miles west of Reno, we called the air traffic controllers and reported our intentions to land in Reno. We flew over my childhood house, and landed at the Reno airport.

The flight was exactly four hours of flying time.

- by the flight pilot Catherine Houghton

The first time I woke up was around 2:00 am and later on I kept woke up. I didn’t get a good sleep. I even scared by a strange dream, of course I won’t write here. I checked out and gave the follower, which I brought back from the memorial service, to the neighbor. I had omelet at the hotel’s restaurant. I ordered vegetarian omelet, it was really bad looking but he taste was ok.

John was waiting at the gate at 8:30 am. We went Reno Fly Service which is inside the Reno Airport. Kitty called John and said she is arriving in 15 minutes. John just drove me go around the Reno Airport to have a look.

Kitty arrived as same time we go back. We walked into the Reno Fly Service office. Kitty want us learn how to use the GPS system. John and I got the manual of GPS and watched a training tape.

We departed at 10:00. Kitty was the pilot, John was the co-pilot and I sat at the back seat. We flew by the Sierra Nevada and reached the famous Yosemite National Park. We saw the three famous waterfalls there.

Eventually, I figured out how to use GPS system. It is so easy, pilot just need to set the angle to the target. But Kitty is a professional pilot, she just use radio and landmark to fly. I asked her why she doesn’t use GPS; she said it will have less fun. I really agree it.

We landed Columbia at 1:30 pm and filled the fuel. Kitty asked me what will happen if I can’t catch the flight if we go to the town and have something there. I told her I will pay two hundred dollars to change the following to flights. I thought I’d rather to drive from Reno to Los Angels and refund the tickets. Kitty said that if I do so the car dropping fee in different cities will be five or six hundred dollars. It looked we have to cancel the walk to the town; we went back to the plane.

We took off at almost 2:00 pm. John suggested that we fly another route to save time. Kitty accepted the suggestion, eventually we arrived Reno at 3:30 pm.

John quickly brought me out the Reno Fly Service, put me on the car. Even the service is also inside the airport, but I can’t check-in directly from service. John had to drive me outside around half airport to reach the entrance of the public terminal.

My luggage was over weighted again, but it was only 7.5 pounds. I took something out and got pass. The big luggage would be delivered to Los Angels without unloading at San Francisco by myself. I took almost one hour fly from Reno to San Francisco.

When I was waiting at the San Francisco Airport, I had Japanese Garlic Beef Rice. I also bought five discounted books, include a Teddy Bear index book, a fantasy book, a history book, a novel about Cleopatra and a fortune teller book.

I stayed at airport for one and half hour and one more hour from San Francisco to Los Angels. Sam’s uncle was already waiting for me at the Los Angels Airport. He picked me and sent me to Sam’s aunt’s house, which is in Pomona City.

Rodeo Parade

Saturday
June 21, 2003 in Reno, NV

Kitty called me at 9:00 am, she told me that it was the Annual Reno Rodeo Parade Day. She arranged his friend Bruce to bring me there. I quickly got up, brushed teeth and had a quick breakfast of three fried eggs only.

We met at the lobby by 10:00 pm; the parade was not far away. We didn’t miss a lot; it was one and half hour long. There were forty some squares past, I took pictures and video. The parade was very interesting; people wear cow boy dressing, rode on horse with flag handled. The youngest was a cow girl only four years old.

Reno is very beautiful and peaceful, it is well known as The Biggest Little City In The World.

San Francisco Chinatown II, California

June 20, 2003 in San Francisco, CA
Friday

I woke up at 9:00 am and felt really tired. There was no any motivation for me to leave the hotel room. I just modified some pictures and did some preparation for the web pages.

Keith recommended me to take shuttle bus to airport; the shuttle bus he mentioned called Blue Van. I called 1-800-BlueVan and booked it. The Blue Van company told me that the van will arrive between 4:00 to 4:45 pm.

I left hotel almost 1:00 pm without breakfast and lunch. I walked to Union Square and took cable cab to the China Town. China Town is always a mess, I just walked around. There is a video rental shop, the assistants inside were all Shanghainese. I spoke in Shanghainese to kid with them.

It was almost 2:00 pm but I didn’t find any good restaurant yet. There is a restaurant pastes the menu on the windows with Shanghai dish name. I walked in and the boss spook Cantonese to me, I exited restaurant immediately. I don’t think a Cantonese can make real good Shanghai food in United States. They even can’t make good Cantonese food. Eventually, I gave up finding a Shanghai restaurant. I had Mock Turtle Noodle at a normal Canton style restaurant, the noodle was Cantonese noodle and the dumplings inside were real good.

I bought a 24oz Bud Light and a small bottle of Jack Daniel’s. I went back to Hilton Hotel by #30 public bus. I had nothing to do and just sat in the lobby and went online through wireless service.

The chess was behind the glass case, so the photo quality was not good.

Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, first time

Thursday, raining at evening

I got up at 7:00 am. I didn’t sleep well these days and didn’t know why. I called home and Lara refused her grandma to talk with me. She insisted grandma to read the story for her and she’s kept crying. The bad girl is.

I didn’t go to work today since I had nothing to do there. I bought a new wireless prepaid card and went online as well as I was eating breakfast. Joanne of San Jose office wrote email to me and wanted me to confirm hotel reservation and other issues. I called hotel to confirm the reservation and went online to book the Hilton at San Francisco.

I left hotel almost 11:00 am and took metro directly to the Smithsonian Station. I was going to look for the China paint at Freer Gallery, which belongs to Smithsonian Museum. The Freer Gallery is connected with Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, there was some art exhibitions include China, Islam and others. I stayed at the gallery shop for half hour and bought A Simple Monk, which is the album of Dalai Lama. I also bought another book Music In The Sky, which is talking about the escaped 17th Karmapa. What a good books are. I also got a book at the information center and there were some coupons inside. I found that the discount can be 20% if I use coupon, then I decided go back and get the discount back. It was easy there, the person just let me get refund and buy as the discounted price. I save more than 10 dollars.

I left Sackler Gallery and it was already 2:30 pm. I went to the African Art Museum, which also belongs to Smithsonian and just faces the Sackler Gallery. Those two building like twin building, the same size but Sackler Gallery had square roof and square decoration and African Art Museum has round roof and round decoration.

I was really tired and missing mussel so much. There is a huge food court at Union Station, I decided go there to have a try. I didn’t find mussel and got Sushi as lunch.

Sushi, $10.50 from the food court of the Union Station.

It was 4:00 pm after I finished my lunch, then took metro back to the hotel. I went online, found Ben Luo and did some chat with him.

The hair shampoo I brought this time was without the anti-dandruff function, it caused my scalp felt itch all the days. I couldn’t stand it the went out to buy head & shoulders without caring about the raining.

I also bought supper, which was just a salad. I walked back to the hotel and the rain was even harder.

Supper, $4.99 bought from CVS.

I was updating the website whole evening. 11:33 pm, I ate the rest noodle yesterday. It was so delicious and I even drank all the sauce off

Wednesday

I got up around 7:00 am as well as woke up around 6:00 am. I got email from Fang Shi Ming who is well known as Fang Zou Zi (ark), he said he was in Beijing and would be back to San Diego on June 20. I replied to him, and told him I am going to San Diego to meet him.

I went to HCHB at 8:30 but the guard refused me go through the entrance at Constitution and 15th street. I had to walked walk to 14th street, took elevator to 3rd floor and back to 1st floor, then can reach Ann’s office (room 1223).

I had a real good chatting with Ann. She said she will select me as the EBDU (E-Business Develop Unit) EAP Leader and want to me to do as the trainer of the region. She also mentioned that about sending me to Vietnam get a training.

I had lunch with Blair together, at the food bar under the Ronald Reagan building. I got Sushi Deluxe since there was one Ikura (salmon roe), which is my favorite, included.

After lunch, I said goodbye to Blair. He was going to Vladivostok tomorrow, to do the work I should do. I went hotel directly by metro. I reached my room at 1:00 pm, there was a envelop on the ground, International Automobile Association mailed International Driver’s License to me. It made me so happy. But eventually I found they printed wrong information on my card, it wasn't my name and address. I had to contact with IAA again and asked them to print a new one to mail to me. The bad IAA let me pay the express mail fee, which is $14, kind of robbing me.

I decided finish my MBA thesis paper that afternoon. I owed my professor Dr. McMillan for a long time, the due date was May 1st. I spent the whole afternoon and eventually I finished the document.

I went out around 8:00, it was going to rain. I walked to the famous George Town, and walked into an art shop. I bought some color sticks and another bead chain toy for Lara.

It was start raining when I was looking for mussel as supper. I can’t find it but I found Barnes & Nobel, which is a bookstore I bought some books 3 years before. This time I bought a recipe book called Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book, the cover said it is the America’s number one cookbook since 1930. Also, I bought a Kama Sutra for Sam.

It was already 10:00 pm when I walked out of the book store, the CVS was closed. I had to walk back to 22nd street and went to Meiwah again. This time, I ordered Pan-Fried Noodles with Seafood and Vegetables. The assistant saw me always take away instead of eat in the restaurant; I guess she was thinking that I will share with some person. She gave me two pairs of chopsticks.

Bronze Medal Award

June 4, 2003 in Washington D.C.
Wednesday

I got the Bronze Metal Award form the Under Secretary of Department of Commerce. The Bronze Medal is the International Trade Administration highest award (Department of Commerce website).

Mr. Shao is recognized for serving CS Shanghai as its system administrator during a four-year period of enormous challenge when the Commercial Service was deploying increasingly sophisticated systems throughout the field, China’s telecommunications and Internet infrastructure still lagged well behind the rest of the world, and our Shanghai office’s system requirements were growing ever more complex and critical. During this period Yule’s contributions expanded beyond Shanghai to bene fit the entire China program, through his website work, his system engineering by phone and e-mail, his development of applications, and his travel to the other posts to do upgrades and train people. Early on, his expertise also came to the attention of Washington, so that he was soon enlisted to create a bilingual CMS platform for the Asia field, and to help solve system-wide problems for ITA.
