菲律賓是個多事的地方，雖然可能沒有印度尼西亞厲害（印尼的故事，我會在另一篇裡寫到）。就在country clearance上，還提到Abu Sayyaf（阿布薩耶夫，用中文是不是很熟悉這個名字？）關於這個「阿布」幹了些啥，感興趣的大可以去google一下，可謂觸目驚心，令人髮指。
以下是Lonely Planet對菲律賓的Overview和Travel warning:
Overview: Although overlooked by the world, the Philippines is still cheap and cheerful.
With a reputation for being chaotic and corrupt, the Philippines has something of an image problem. But most who make the journey to the 7000-odd islands that comprise the Philippines are pleasantly surprised by their beauty and by the friendliness of the people.
Most of the Philippines is laidback, stable and relatively safe. The locals are an exceptionally helpful bunch and there are fantastic reefs and fish. On top of this, transport is cheap, the food is good, accommodation is plentiful and (for the monolinguistic) English is widely spoken.
Travel Warning: Fighting in North Cotabato – Typhoon – Terrorist Activity
Up to 130,000 people have reportedly been displace due to fighting in southern Philippines between the army and Muslim rebels. The trouble spot is North Cotabato – travellers must avoid this region.
Typhoon Fengshen tore through central and southern Philippines on June 21 causing widespread damage. At least 160 people lost their lives on land, in addition to almost 800 killed when a ferry capsized during its journey from Manila to Cebu. Only 56 survivors were found.
Travellers to the Philippines are advised to avoid most of Mindanao, an island group in the southern Philippines. Three people were killed in July when a grenade was thrown into a shop on one of the islands, and later that month, a bomb blast on a bus injured 27 people. Travellers should steer clear of the Zamboanga peninsula, Basilan, Tawi-Tawi and the Sulu archipelago, where ethnic and religious animosities fuel ongoing violence. Abu Sayyaf, a Muslim extremist group who have claimed responsibility for attacks on foreigners, operate out of this area. Military operations against the group can flare into heavy fighting.

由上面的文字，我們可以看到Abu Sayyaf，可以看到Muslim extremist（穆斯林極端主義者），也可以看到最後的一行severity: High-level alert，可見是個如何的多事之地。
首先，我們都知道菲律賓的首都是馬尼拉，其實就像Los Angels有county和city之分一樣，Manila也是。我們平時所說的Manila，其實叫做Metro Manila，Metro是Metropolitan的意思，中文一般譯作「大馬尼拉」。它的範圍挺大，包含幾個province，15個city，有2200萬人口，夠大吧。整個菲律賓，被定為Metro的地方，一個是Manila，另一個則是著名的Cebu。
Manila City在Metro Manila的當中位置，才是真正的首都，以前的首都在Quezon City（1948-1976），也在Metro Manila中。但是和想像中，或者和相當然的不一樣，菲律賓最繁華的地方，不在Manila City，而在Makati City。
按照wikipedia的說法，Makati City是菲律賓的major financial, commercial and economical hub，怎麼說呢？或許和陸家嘴有點相似。
我就住在Makati，Makati的最繁華地區，極有可能是Metro Manila最繁華的地方，以及整個菲律賓最繁華的地方。我住的地方，在Manila Avenue和Ayala Avenue的交界處，依次是Shangri-la，Peninsula和Mandarin Oriental三個大酒店，而Ayala Avenue更是一條繁華的商業街。
其實，就算Makati City是最繁華的，其實也不過五六個街區全是高樓大廈而已，在高樓的背後，一眼望出去，就沒有什麼大型的高樓了。當然，在美國，高樓並不能代表一個城市的繁華程度，但是在東南亞，就有些「可見一斑」的意思了。
說到「可見一斑」，讓我們先來看兩件事。
第一件，出租車。出租車的起步費是35 Pesos，相當於5.2元人民幣，你可以考慮參照一下國內出租車起步費5元左右的城市，再來想像一下馬尼拉。
第二件，煙。一包Dunhill（進口煙）在7-eleven的價格是58Pesos（8.6元）。這並不奇怪，然而奇怪的在後面。在Makati City和Manila City（其實我只去過這兩個地方，前者是金融市，後者是首都市，我不相信別的地方的發達程度會超過這兩個），有許多人，捧著一個皮鞋盒大小的盒子，盒子是一包包拆開的萬寶路、三五等煙，還有一個個單個包裝的口香糖，我看到有些人就是跑到那些捧著盒子的人前，放下一個5Pesos的硬幣，拿起一支煙，點上……這裡的煙是可以論支賣的。
說到煙，還有件怪事，就是在菲律賓大街上的店買煙，居然要比在機場免稅店還便宜，前面說到過的Dunhill，在7-eleven是58Pesos，居然到了機場要90多，漲幅超過百分之八十，可謂奇怪之極啊！（這裡排除假煙、走私等等額外因素）。
既然說到了煙，就來先把煙的說完。菲律賓抽煙的人很多，女人抽煙的也多。在Ayala的office building門口，永遠都有那麼一堆堆的人在抽煙，其中不乏白領麗人，要是你有時間，可以沿著Ayala的繁華大樓一路走過去，雖然Ayala有七千多號，但是繁華的地方也不過幾百號，走走累不死人。我敢保證，你這麼一路走過去，可以看到無數的美人在樓下吸煙，穿著時尚，打扮靚麗。
在菲律賓，至少在Makati，所有的餐廳和大樓裡，都不能吸煙，在我的酒店裡，Club成員有專門的小房間以供吸煙，當然定房拿到smoking room，也能吸煙。
在餐廳裡吸煙，我只有在菲律賓的Chinatown有過幾次經歷，雖然牆壁上有著「禁煙」的標記，但是大家都在裡面吞雲吐霧，也就入鄉隨俗了。噢，還有，如同中國的機場，菲律賓的機場也有專門的吸煙室，其實是設在機場裡的一個酒吧，有位子坐，如果高興的話，還可以來上一杯，不點東西沒人會來煩你。
回過來說Makati，那是個繁華的CBD，有許多的嶄新的大樓，有HSBC的大樓，也有LV的專賣，然而繁華的只是那麼幾個街區而已，在繁華的背後，我看到的是別的。
背後，不是指文學上的「繁華背後」，而是實實在在的back street，就在Ayala和Dela Costa的背後，那條街叫做Velero，街上有許多鐵皮小房子，是移動房那種，和美國華盛頓街頭的那些賣飲料的小房子很像。Makati的這種小房子，是賣午飯的，所謂的午飯不是盒飯，是各種很簡單的東西，香蕉、卷餅。工人打扮的人，就站在小房子的擱板前吃，那天正下著大雨，颱風的那種，別說站著吃東西，就是你光打把傘什麼也不干，也保證你渾身濕透。
再來說說文字上的「繁華背後」。Makati的這些大樓，每幢都有警衛，穿著白色的挺刮的制服，手裡拿著一根小棒子，每一個進大樓的人都要把包打開，警衛則用小棒子翻撿一遍，以防有所「夾帶」。大多數的大樓前，不但有警衛，還是狼狗，應該是防爆犬吧。
防爆犬還出現在停車場，所有的車輛要進入停車場，需要停車檢查，把車停下，把後背箱打開，警衛會用一個裝著鏡子的探頭來查看車底，經過徹底的檢查，才能通過。
寫一點無奈的事，如今的上海也是如此了。我上班的那幢大樓，算是
上海比較著名的寫字樓，從8月1日開始，車輛進入也要如此檢查了，每天早上防爆犬便繞著我的車聞上一圈，然後才以進入車庫。
還有一件無奈的事，也記在這裡。大家看到了，菲律賓是個多事的地方，有點豐富的反恐經驗，機場裡就有兩道安檢，誰知如果你要到上海的話，還不止如此。在上海航班的登機口，你得過第三個安檢品，把所有的隨身行李再檢查一遍，然後再檢查travel document，不是已經在邊檢檢查過了嗎？不行，還得檢查一次，誰讓你去的是上海呢？那裡可正在開奧運會呢！我問了檢查人員，說這是上海方面的要求，除了「無奈」，我還能說什麼呢？
