Integrate service pack into W2K installation CD

There are several documents online teach how to distill the boot image from installation CD by ISOBuster or similar tools and use the boot image for creating new CD. I followed the way and eventually failed after waste several CD-R. Fortunately, I found an easier, safer and better way to do it.

The tools which I selected is UltraISO from EZBSystems, it can modify the content of a CD image. The burning software which I used is DiscJuggler, it can create a .cdi (short for CD Image) extended CD images and burn CD from most standard images.

Here is my detailed step:

  1. Use DiscJuggler create an image of official legal Microsoft Windows 2000 installation CD called win2000.cdi
  2. Create a temp folder called c:\Win2Knew, copy the entire i386 folder from Microsft Windows 2000 installation CD into c:\Win2Knew as a sub folder
  3. Execute the service pack use the command:
    c:\win\win2ksp4.exe -s:c:\Win2Knew
The service pack will automatically change the files under c:\Win2Knew\i386 to the newest version
  4. Use UltraISO open the CD image created in the first step
  5. Replace image’s i386 folder with c:\Win2Knew\i386 folder, save the image
  6. Burn the image

This way also works for Windows XP.
